What should I avoid while using nicotine products?

While you are using nicotine lozenges, gum, skin patches, inhalers, or nasal spray, you should avoid smoking. This is very important, because smoking while using a nicotine product can cause a nicotine overdose. You might need to avoid caffeine while using nicotine; you should discuss this with your doctor. If you are using nicotine gum or lozenges, you will need to avoid eating or drinking for 15 minutes before you put them in your mouth. If you are using nicotine patches, you should avoid putting them on skin that is irritated, oily, scarred, or chapped and also avoid wearing them during a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) imaging scan.
