What are the treatment options for small intestine cancer?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

Your treatment options for small intestine cancer depend on how far advanced your cancer is. The best way to treat this cancer is to remove the tumor surgically, which will also cut away some of the unaffected tissue around it. If it is not possible to remove the tumor, your doctor may conduct surgery to bypass the tumor, directing the flow of the intestine around it. In most small intestine cancers (adenocarcinomas), chemotherapy is not prescribed. Radiation therapy may be used as palliative therapy (to reduce symptoms and ease suffering).
