What are some tips on a good bedtime routine for my child?

Charles J. Sophy, MD
Adolescent Medicine

·        Maintain a routine bedtime for your kids.

·        Be consistent in observing your own routine bedtime as parents.

·        Include a warm bath-time as part of the routine.

·        Create a conducive environment for rest to occur.

·        Make bedtime experience an inviting and welcoming experience for your kids.

·        Provide time for unwinding with a quiet activity such as reading, telling a story, praying together, head/back massaging, or listening to a soft music.

All of the following have been linked to more consistent bedtimes:

  • eliminating all screens after dinner, including, but not limited to, television, videogames, DVD’s and computers
  • regular, vigorous exercise during the day
  • consistent wake times in the morning
  • avoiding all forms of caffeine after about 10 am
  • keeping stress to a minimum.
