Are antidepressants a sleeping aid?

Antidepressants such as trazodone are sometimes used to prevent you from waking early in the morning and to relieve insomnia. Insomnia treatment usually uses low doses of an antidepressant, unless your insomnia is caused by depression. If your insomnia is caused by depression, then higher doses are recommended. However, antidepressants may cause side effects such as daytime sleepiness.
