How can nail cosmetics affect my nails?

Some nail cosmetics may improve nail health while others increase risks of nail problems. Nail and hand creams, for example, help keep nails flexible and moisturized. But other products, such as nail polish removers, often contain acetone, alcohol, or other ingredients that can dry nails. This can make them more brittle and likely to split or break. Other nail products, such as nail hardeners, may contain formaldehyde, which can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation in some people. Apply nail polish and nail polish removers no more than once a week, and moisturize hands and nails daily to counteract the damaging effects of some nail products.
