Why does vitiligo turn hair white?

Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes the body's pigment-producing cells called melanocytes to die. These cells make melanin, the chemical that gives skin and hair color. So if the cells near hair are affected, then the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and beards can turn white. People with vitiligo can be prematurely gray.
