Seborrheic dermatitis can cause dry, scaly skin on a child's head, and this condition can affect adults as well. Dry, scaly skin on the scalp -- also known as dandruff -- is usually an early symptom of seborrheic dermatitis. The scalp may be itchy, too, and in some cases can appear greasy rather than dry. As this condition progresses, it can produce a rash with acne-like bumps. The rash may spread to the hairline, eyebrows, nose, ears, and other parts of the body.
