What causes cheilitis?

Cheilitis is caused by a number of different factors, depending on the type of cheilitis you may have. Contact cheilitis is caused by an irritant or allergen. Exfoliative cheilitis is caused by emotional stress or excessive biting or picking of the lips. Actinic cheilitis is caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. Angular cheilitis is most commonly caused by dentures and possibly a nutritional deficiency in iron, zinc, or protein.
