Albinism is serious because it can lead to severe sunburns, skin cancer, and vision problems. Some syndromes that come with different types of albinism (eg, Hermansky-Pudlak and Chediak-Higashi) may cause additional health problems. Some of these problems may include getting sick often with colds and other infections (due to lowered immunity) and bleeding/bruising (due to blood abnormalities).

How serious albinism is varies from person to person. It also varies according to the type of albinism. For example, some people may have little difficulty with their vision and never experience major skin problems, while others may have greater problems with both their vision and skin.
