How can the rash in pityriasis rosea spread?

Pityriasis rosea usually starts out as an oval-shaped patch of pink, scaly skin on the chest or back, but spreads within a week or two. More patches may appear on the back or chest, as well as the arms, legs, and neck. In rare cases, pityriasis rosea produces a rash on the face, In some people, the patches of affected skin form a pattern resembling a Christmas tree on the back.
