Are freckles dangerous?

Dr. Ellen Marmur, MD
Dermatology

Freckles are not dangerous, but they are a marker of sun damage. How many freckles someone has tells me how much sun exposure he or she has had. Freckles are usually an indication that someone is at higher risk of skin cancer (since they are usually found on people with lighter skin and eyes), but darker skin can freckle too. You are not usually born with freckles; they develop in the sun.

Patients often come in who want their freckles erased. If there are a few that stand out, or to decrease the overall number, I use a YAG or ruby laser (the kinds that target pigment) to get rid of them. These lasers are specific (about the size of a pen) and zap essentially one freckle at a time. They also leave a scab, so I would not want to vaporize an entire face.
