Are there alternative treatments for atopic dermatitis?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD

Talk to your doctor about alternative treatments for atopic dermatitis, an itchy skin condition commonly called eczema. Herbalists and other practitioners of alternative medicine recommend a number of different treatments. Evening primrose oil is one of the most frequently used alternative therapies for this skin disorder. The oil of this herb is rich in fatty acids that appear to be lacking in the skin of people with atopic dermatitis. However, studies have failed to show conclusively that people with atopic dermatitis benefit from taking supplements containing evening primrose oil.

Scientists have also studied borage oil, another herbal preparation recommended for atopic dermatitis. Research suggests that borage oil is not a reliable treatment for atopic dermatitis, though it may help a small number of people with this skin condition.

Other dietary supplements have been used to treat atopic dermatitis, including vitamin B6, vitamin E, and zinc. However, there's little scientific evidence that they work. Some natural remedies for atopic dermatitis could interact with medications you're taking or cause other health problems. Check with your doctor before using a dietary supplement, herbal preparation, or any other form of alternative medicine for atopic dermatitis.

There's little scientific research or evidence to support alternative atopic dermatitis treatments. Even so, some alternative treatments have come up. Witch hazel or chamomile, among other herbs and oils, have been used by some to provide relief. Your doctor can answer questions you may have about treatment options.
