Are all skin cleansers the same?

Skin cleansers are recommended by dermatologists as a way to rid the skin of dirt, oil, bacteria and other contaminants. However, some skin cleansers may cause more harm than good if they strip the skin of essential lipids and proteins, thus deteriorating the skin barrier that protects us. Soap-based cleansers generally contain cleansing ingredients that bind to proteins within the skin and cause swelling in the outermost layers, which can lead to irritation. Additionally, harsh cleansers can remove skin's own natural moisture, leading to dryness.
