Is washing with soap better than using hand sanitizer?

A better way to look at this is when is soap and water better than hand sanitizer? Anytime there is dirt or other possible foreign material on your hands, soap and water is superior to alcohol sanitizer. If your hands are relatively "clean," a high alcohol content hand sanitizer is sufficient. That is why we use soap and water after using the restroom as there is a risk of foreign matter (the poop) on your hands. However, after touching a door handle, using hand sanitizer is sufficient.
