How is surgery used to treat Merkel cell carcinoma?

Surgery is often the first treatment used for Merkel cell carcinoma. In most cases, doctors will remove the entire tumor and some surrounding tissue. They may use a method called Mohs surgery, which involves slicing off the tumor layer by layer and testing each part for cancerous cells as they go. This way, they can preserve as much healthy tissue as possible. If doctors suspect the cancer has spread, they may also surgically remove the nearby lymph nodes.
