How do other illnesses affect Merkel cell carcinoma?

Other illnesses don't necessarily have an effect on Merkel cell carcinoma. However, certain things related to the cancer may affect your body's response to illness. A risk factor for Merkel cell carcinoma is a weakened immune system, so people whose Merkel cell carcinoma is caused by those conditions may have a harder time fighting off illness. Also, if Merkel cell carcinoma spreads to the lymph nodes and other organs, there may be complications that make you more likely to have problems with other illnesses. Treatment for Merkel cell carcinoma, especially chemotherapy and radiation, may also impact your immune system.
