How does Kaposi sarcoma affect the body?

Kaposi sarcoma begins in the cells that line the blood and lymphatic vessels. When these cells are infected with herpesvirus 8, they may grow out of control and form a tumor. These tumors, or lesions, appear on the skin and can form almost anywhere in the body, including internal organs. The lesions cause flat, dark-colored patches to form on the skin. Most of the time, they don't cause any other symptoms. However, if they occur in certain areas, they may become painful and swollen, or they may break open and bleed. This can cause further complications, especially if they form in the digestive tract, lungs, or other organs.
