Does Kaposi sarcoma run in families?

Kaposi sarcoma does not really run in families. This is because this type of cancer is caused by a genetic problem that's the result of the Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (herpesvirus 8) instead of an inherited genetic mutation. However, in certain areas of the world where this virus is more common (especially Africa), the virus may be passed down from mothers to their children. Even if you have this virus, though, you may not develop Kaposi sarcoma, so it's not said to be an inherited condition.
