Can Merkel cell carcinoma spread throughout the body?

Merkel cell carcinoma is a very aggressive kind of skin cancer that spreads quickly throughout the body. The tumors first develop in the Merkel cells of the skin and form small bumps on the skin. However, within a few months or even weeks, the tumors grow more deeply into the skin and can start to spread, or metastasize. Merkel cell carcinoma may spread to nearby tissue, lymph nodes, and eventually distant organs. Because it spreads so quickly, it's important to see a doctor as soon as you notice any symptoms.
