Does Merkel cell carcinoma increase my risk for other skin cancer?

Merkel cell carcinoma may not necessarily increase the risk for other types of skin cancer, but it has a high rate of recurrence. This means that even after treatment, Merkel cell carcinoma comes back in about 50% of people with the disease. Merkel cell carcinoma may not lead to other cancers, but it still may have a connection to other skin cancers. Merkel cell carcinoma may develop after having another type of cancer, like basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma.
