What are the types of red birthmarks?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
Red birthmarks, also known as vascular birthmarks, are caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels. The overgrowth produces red, purplish, or bluish growths in skin. Hemangiomas are among the most common red birthmarks. These are red or purplish growths, sometimes bulbous, that usually clear up on their own within a few years.

So-called "stork bites" are red spots that usually appear on the eyelids or back of the neck. They tend to disappear within the first year or so of life.

Port wine stains are permanent red birthmarks that can occur anywhere on the skin. They can often be successfully treated with laser therapy. Consult your dermatologist for more information about red birthmarks.
