Can skaters do strength and conditioning in a group setting?

Strength and conditioning is a very important component of off-ice training. It is typically offered through group or individual training sessions. The advantage of group training is that it is less costly, and it can be fun working with other people. The disadvantage of group strength and conditioning is that it is more difficult for the instructor to individualize a program. therefore, small groups are more desirable than larger groups. Ideally, individualized training should be obtained especially when first learning exercises. This way, nothing is overlooked, and technique can be tailored for individual needs. Although all students in a group have a common goal to enhance their skating abilities, it is important to address any individual weaknesses or compensations. Without attention to these details, bad habits can be formed, and poor movement patterns can result in injury. Eventually, if a small group of students are at a similar conditioning level and have obtained good working skills and coordination, working together can be enjoyable and create favorable competition.
