How can men improve their sexual health?

Sometimes, just making a few simple changes to your lifestyle can give your sexual health a significant performance boost. Consider taking the following steps to help tune up your health and reduce your odds of erectile problems:

  • Step on the scale. Being obese increases the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED). But you can start improving your sexual performance with weight loss.
  • Get physical. Exercising regularly makes you healthier on every level, both mentally and physically. But more importantly, research shows that being more active can mean better erectile function, too. Exercise is good for sex because it increases blood circulation and protects the health of your heart and your blood vessels.
  • Ditch the vices. Both smoking and drinking alcohol frequently can increase the risk of ED. And although drinking a bit of alcohol may seem to loosen you up and even get you in the mood for sex, too much alcohol will have a sedating effect on your brain and body and even your erectile function.
  • Chill out. Could stress or anxiety or a blue mood be affecting your sex life? That spells bad news for your overall health, too, so seek help from a doctor or therapist.
  • Focus on your partner. Are conflicts with your partner making it difficult to connect? Spend time each week talking about your relationship and your feelings. Gently raise any concerns or issues you have, and figure out ways to work through them together. A counselor or therapist can help guide your talks if you find them going nowhere.
  • Don't hide. Any changes you experience in your sex drive or sexual performance are sure to affect your partner, too, so it's best to be open and honest about what's going on. Confiding in your partner can bring you closer, and having your partner's support and understanding is a good thing for increasing intimacy.

Most of these steps have the potential to greatly improve not only your sex life but also your overall health. But if you continue to have issues, don't ignore the problem. Let your doctor know what you're experiencing so you can find a satisfying solution together.
