How does sertraline HCL interact with other medications or food?

Sertraline HCL has the potential to interact with other medications. You should not take MAO inhibitors (MAOIs) while taking sertraline HCL, or within two weeks of stopping it. This could lead a serious and fatal interaction.

It should also not be used with pimozide. Sertraline HCL may interact with other drugs so tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the things you are taking. This includes:

  • diabetic medications including insulin
  • other antidepressants
  •  anticoagulants
  • anti-platelet medications
  • buspirione
  • destromethorphan
  • herbal supplements (such as melatonin, St. John's wort, tryptophan)
  • lithium
  • migraine medications
  • stimulants such as amphetamines/phentermine
  • street drugs like ecstasy
Taking medications that have drowsiness as a side effect, like antihistamines, may have this side effect intensified while taking sertraline HCL. Sertraline HCL may affect liver enzymes and how they remove some medications from your body. This includes cimetidine, clozapine, and certain heart rhythm drugs. If you take another medication which makes you prone to seizures, you should talk to your doctor. In addition to medications, sertraline HCL interacts with grapefruit juice; do not drink or consume grapefruit products while on this drug.
