Can sensory-related developmental disabilities be prevented?

The causes of sensory-related developmental disabilities vary and are sometimes related to genetic defects, so in many cases these disorders cannot be effectively prevented. However, some developmental disabilities are related to maternal health during pregnancy, so staying healthy during pregnancy may prevent your child from having certain kinds of sensory-related developmental disorders. For example, congenital rubella syndrome, which can cause both hearing and vision problems, is related to maternal infection with the rubella virus.
