Why is it important for seniors to get the flu vaccine?

Influenza is the most important vaccine-preventable contagious infection in older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 80 and 90 percent of flu-related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older.

The flu vaccine has been shown to reduce the severity and duration if one gets the flu and decrease the risk of hospitalization, serious illness and death due to flu. Contrary to popular belief, getting the vaccine does not cause the flu.
