Who should not take ramelteon?

People with severe liver disease should not take ramelteon. Another condition that should keep you from taking this drug is sleep apnea, in which people stop breathing many times during the night. If you are taking an antidepressant called fluvoxamine (Luvox), you should not take ramelteon.

Also, if you have been on ramelteon in the past and have had the serious side effect known as angioedema, you should not try to take the medication again. Angioedema is a swelling under the skin, especially around the eyes and lips. It can be dangerous because, if the swelling obstructs your airway, you could suffocate.
