How effective is ramelteon?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Studies have shown that ramelteon reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and increases total sleep time in people with insomnia. These effects are usually not large. Ramelteon has been taken by people with chronic insomnia for 6 months with no loss of effectiveness. Some other sleep aids become less effective after a few days or weeks of continued use.
