What type of surgery is needed to correct scoliosis?

Severe scoliosis may require surgery to correct the curve of the spine. This surgery bonds vertebrae together to eliminate the curve. A surgeon may use a metal bar, hooks or clips to hold the bones together so they heal and fuse-much like when a broken bone is set. Bone grafts may be used. Surgery for scoliosis carries the same risk factors as other major bone surgeries, including nerve damage, pain and infection. If you are concerned about surgery for scoliosis, talk to your doctor.

Surgery to correct scoliosis is done through fusion. The spine's shape is corrected with screws and rods.
