What are the complications of congenital scoliosis?

Luke Macyszyn, MD
Complications of congenital scoliosis include problems with the heart, cardiovascular system or lungs. In addition, there may be problems with the urinary system or kidneys. Up to 60 percent of children with congenital scoliosis will have other medical problems. These medical problems are not caused by the scoliosis, but rather scoliosis is one additional problem that the child develops due to an underlying genetic or developmental anomaly. Hence, in children with congenital scoliosis, it is important to assess for these other problems early in development.
