Is pain normal in children with scoliosis?

Scoliosis with a lot of pain in children is a red flag. A child with idiopathic scoliosis would be followed with clinical examinations and x-rays to make sure the curve is not changing as they are growing. But if a child has a tremendous amount of pain associated with scoliosis, more advanced imaging like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be ordered to make sure that there's not something hidden that's causing the scoliosis.

Children may have other things going on that result in scoliosis. The primary pathology may be a tumor or other condition rather than adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Scoliosis usually does not cause pain. If your child has pain, it likely is a sign of a pretty severe curving of the spine. This can put pressure on the nerves, discs, ligaments or muscles.
