Douglas E. Severance, MD
Family Medicine
There are different forms of counseling and therapy for people living with schizophrenia. These approaches are known as psychosocial treatments, and include both individual and group therapy. In psychosocial treatment, patients have the opportunity to learn how to communicate better with others, maintain jobs and relationships, and get through each day. In counseling, patients are educated about their illness, and learn ways to avoid a relapse. Some different types of counseling offered for patients with schizophrenia include:
  • Illness management education and counseling
  • Combined substance abuse and schizophrenia treatment
