Do I call for help if someone with schizophrenia is agitated?

Mark Moronell, MD
Cardiology (Cardiovascular Disease)
If you are with a person with schizophrenia who becomes agitated, you may want to call 911 or a medical professional for advice. In some instances, an agitated person can calm down without hurting anyone. However, there are some circumstances where professional help should be sought for agitation. These instances include:

• If the person seems to be at risk of self-harm or hurting someone else
• If the person does not calm down after taking medications for agitation
• If the person has rested, or slept, and is still agitated
• If the agitation seems excessive or severe
• If other serious symptoms are occurring with the agitation

Do not try to restrain someone who is agitated. This may possibly worsen his symptoms, making him more likely to hurt somebody.
