Does insurance cover schizophrenia treatment?

Mark Moronell, MD

Many insurance policies cover mental health treatment, including treatment for schizophrenia. However, you may want to check your health insurance policy to learn more about the specific benefits your health plan offers. Some insurance plans require plan members to meet a deductible before insurance benefits begin. This is usually an annual fee that must be paid each year, which can range in cost. Many insurance plans refuse to pay for treatment unless you see doctors that are included in the insurance company's provider list. It is helpful to check that list each time you see a doctor. Once you visit your doctor, you will probably need to pay a co-pay, which is a predetermined amount of money paid to the doctor at every visit.
