Will I always hear voices with schizophrenia?

Douglas E. Severance, MD
Family Medicine
If you have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, you may already be familiar with some of the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, like delusions and hallucinations. One of the most common of these symptoms is hearing voices. Antipsychotic medications can help to reduce this type of hallucination. If you are hearing voices, you should visit your primary-care doctor or psychiatrist. Your doctor can help get you the treatment you need, change the medication you are on, or adjust your medication to a more therapeutic dose. Follow your doctor's instructions, as your hallucinations may return if you reduce your dose or stop the medication on your own. Participating in psychosocial therapies like individual or group therapy may also be helpful for you. In these therapies, you can learn how to best manage your symptoms.
