Are there alternative treatments for disorganized schizophrenia?

Most people with disorganized schizophrenia receive a combination of medication and psychotherapy. However, some people are also given electroconvulsive therapy as a treatment. Electroconvulsive therapy is a treatment in which doctors try to change brain function by passing electronic currents through your body. The treatment is reserved for those who don't respond to typical treatment or who have a very serious case of disorganized schizophrenia.

Another alternative treatment for the very ill is institutionalization, in which individuals are hospitalized during very bad psychotic episodes.

Additionally, people with disorganized schizophrenia who are responding well to treatment may receive some alternative therapy that is geared toward training them in life or occupational skills.
