How dangerous is riding a motorcycle?

Between 2001 and 2008, more than 34,000 motorcyclists were killed on U.S. roads, according to the CDC. That was a 55% increase between 2001 and 2008, which is attributed to more people in the U.S. riding motorcycles than ever before. There are obvious reasons that riding a motorcycle is dangerous (e.g., no protection between you and other motor vehicles or obstacles). However, there are ways that you can make riding a motorcycle safer for yourself. The most important thing you can do is to ALWAYS wear a helmet that is DOT approved. Next is to wear protective, reflective clothing while riding so other motorists can see you easily and so that if you do have an accident, less of your body comes into direct contact with the pavement. Another important law to abide by is absolutely NO DRINKING AND RIDING—that should go without saying. And just as if you were driving in a car, avoid tailgating, and use caution when driving over slick surfaces or gravel—there is less keeping you in steady contact with the ground when you have only two wheels.
