How can athletes stay safe during lightning storms?

Institutions should have protocols in place for severe weather, particularly for lightning. Once a protocol for severe weather is put into action, it is important to seek shelter as quickly as possible. If the protocol is not activated, it is recommended to monitor the situation via web sites such as weather.com and products such as the Thunderbolt lightning detector. In the meantime, make sure that all student-athletes are away from anything that is made of metal and if it is during an event have the athletes not playing, seek shelter when possible.
