The drop arm test is also done to check the integrity of the rotator cuff. Your doctor will passively elevate the arm in the plane of the scapula to about 90 degrees and ask you to slowly lower your arm. If you can't do that and the arm just gives out on you, the supraspinatus muscle may be involved in the pathology of your shoulder problem and some of the pain that you're having.
