Why might skin care products for normal skin not help rosacea?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD

Skincare products formulated for normal skin may be too harsh for skin with rosacea, which is more fragile and easily irritated than skin in someone who doesn’t have rosacea. In one survey, the National Rosacea Foundation found that 41% of people said skincare products were triggers for their rosacea. Astringents and toners, which remove skin oils, are often recommended for normal skin, but not for skin with rosacea.  Waterproof products, which may be safe for normal skin, are not recommended for people with rosacea because taking them off can require makeup remover, which may irritate skin with rosacea. Products that are labeled “fragrance free,” “chemical free,” or “for sensitive skin” tend to be best for people with rosacea.
