Several common ingredients in sunscreen can irritate skin with rosacea. These include PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) or Padimate O, and other substances such as fragrances and alcohol. The best sunscreen ingredients for skin with rosacea are those that physically block ultraviolet rays, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Sunscreen bases that contain silicone (look for dimethicone or cyclomethicone on the label) rather than alcohol are also better for people with rosacea. Most pediatric sunscreens are also safe for skin with rosacea. Using sunscreen is especially important for people with rosacea, as sun exposure was named the top trigger for rosacea flare-ups by 81% of those responding to a National Rosacea Society survey.
