Strenuous exercise can be both good and bad for rosacea. Exercise can reduce stress, a common trigger of rosacea symptoms. Regular exercise also helps you maintain good health overall, which is important in keeping your skin looking healthy too. However, strenuous exercise may cause your skin to become flushed for prolonged periods of time. Also, if you exercise outdoors, exposure to wind, sun, and either very cold or very hot temperatures may aggravate rosacea symptoms. The best advice? Don’t stop exercising, but take precautions to minimize rosacea flare-ups. To prevent getting overheated, consider breaking up longer workouts into shorter ones, doing four 15-minute workouts rather than an hour-long one, suggests the American Academy of Dermatology. Spray your face with a water spritzer if you get hot. Protect your skin outdoors by wearing sunscreen, and cover your face with a scarf or mask in cold weather. If the outdoor temperature is either unusually hot or cold, exercise indoors instead.
