How important is skin care with rosacea treatment?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD

Gentle skincare is very important when treating rosacea because it helps to keep rosacea symptoms under control so that medications can work well. Wash skin with a fragrance-free, mild cleanser and pat dry. Wait at least five minutes before applying a topical medication, and then at least another five minutes before applying a moisturizer, suggests the American Academy of Dermatology. The best moisturizer is a barrier-repair emollient that contains a silicone such as dimethicone or cyclomethicone. They are usually gentle enough for skin with rosacea and help to restore the skin’s barrier function and allow it to heal. A foundation makeup that contains a silicone as well as a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB sun rays are ideal ways to protect skin and help it look better too.
