What happens in the first 24 hours after a wisdom tooth is extracted?

In the first 24 hours after a wisdom tooth is extracted you may experience swelling and discomfort. This is normal! To soothe the pain, try using cold compresses or taking any pain medication prescribed by your dentist. If you experience numbness or tingling in your face, don't worry, it should disappear within a few days. If the numbness or tingling persists or if you experience dry socket -- a condition where the extraction site is slow to heal -- consult your dentist.
