How does topical retinol treat acne?

Topical retinols are sometimes used as a treatment for acne. Retinol -- an antioxidant --  helps to neutralize substances called free radicals that can destroy skin cells. It is believed that neutralizing free radicals "calms" the skin, decreasing stress factors that may produce acne.
