What are the side effects of acetylcysteine solution?

Side effects of acetylcysteine solution that usually do not require medical attention can include changes in taste, drowsiness, mouth sores, nausea, vomiting and a runny nose. Get emergency medical help if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as a skin rash, itching or hives. Call 911 for swelling of your face or lips or tongue, breathing problems or chest tightness or pain. Side effects that should be reported to your doctor include clamminess, coughing up blood and fever. When using a nebulizer (a machine that turns a liquid solution into a mist for inhaling), acetylcysteine can leave a sticky residue on your mouth and skin. This can be removed by rinsing with water after each treatment.
