What is benzathine benzylpenicillin used to treat?

Benzathine benzylpenicillin is an antibiotic that is administered only by intramuscular injection. It is most often used to treat infections caused by Treponema species of spirochete bacteria. The most common is the sexually transmitted disease (STD) syphilis, but also includes the non-STD infections yaws, pinta and bejel. It is also effective for infections caused by N. gonorrhea (gonorrhea, another STD), C. diphtheriae (diphtheria), B. anthracis (anthrax).

Because syphilis doesn't have many obvious symptoms right after infection, people may not realize that they have this bacterial infection until the secondary stage.
