What should I know about hydroxyzine hydrochloride (HCl) before taking it?

The most commonly experienced side effect of hydroxyzine is drowsiness, which is often temporary and may only last a few days or until the dosage has been reduced. Until you know how hydroxyzine hydrochloride will affect you, you should not drive or operate heavy machinery. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride may interact with certain medications, including non-narcotic analgesics, barbiturates and narcotics. In addition, hydroxyzine hydrochloride may intensify the effects of alcohol, so alcohol consumption should be avoided. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride should not be taken by people who are allergic or sensitive to it, and it should not be taken by women during early pregnancy. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride is not intended for use longer than four months.
