How soon after taking surfactant will my child's symptoms improve?

In many cases, the lungs react quickly and positively to surfactant treatment. It is possible that your baby's lungs will get slightly worse at first, but then quickly rebound within the next few hours due to the treatment. If your child does not improve after the first surfactant dose, then additional doses may be required.
