How can I deal with mixed desires for union and separation?

I cannot tell you how to get around this inconsistency of a simultaneous desire for community and autonomy. As with all great mysteries of life, it is more important to experience this feeling than to understand it. As humans, we love as well as hate each other, but the bottom line is we need each other. We need each other to grow, to create, to evolve. Living in a relationship enables us to break free of our ego-centered bonds and transcend our inauthentic self. When we live in love - with ourselves, with our fellow men, and with God - we see that we are actually much more than we ever dreamed. We are not just a drop in the ocean, we are the ocean.
